Today we left Lisbon and said a sad farewell to Filipe and took our mid day flight to the Azores Island of Sao Miquel. We were met at the airport by our guide for the next 3 days (Gary) and driven to our accommodations in a town called Calhetas on the northern shore of the island. The house manager, Estrela, met us upon our arrival at the accommodation. After a quick introduction to the house where we will be staying Estrela fed us a most delicious home cooked meal of Tuna and much much appreciated vegetables. One thing about the cuisine of mainland Portugal is that vegetables are definitely not the star of any restaurant meal as fries are usually served as the vegetable of choice.
The accommodation is a lovely 2 bedroom house set on a large parcel of land backing onto the ocean.
After lunch Estrela took us to a local grocery store so we could stock up on breakfast items to take us through the next few days and pick up a few items for supper for the evening. Tomorrow is the start of our tour of the island of Sao Miguel and we are looking forward to another few days of exploring another area of Portugal.
